Dogs Test Luck in Lucan

Lucan, ON – Saturday night hockey in the Provincial Junior Hockey League was alive and well last night as the Bulldogs travelled to the Lucan Community and Memorial Centre to test their luck against the Lucan Irish of the PJHL Western Conference (Yeck Division).

Last night’s exhibition game marked a special occasion for the Bulldogs coaching staff as Head Coach Ryan Calbeck and Assistant Coaches Zack Morrison and Brad Vervaecke all made their Provincial Junior Hockey League coaching debuts.

In front of a healthy 175 fans, the back and forth tilt between the Bulldogs and the Irish was a spirited contest between two clubs searching for fresh starts to the 2021-2022 season.

Lucan jumped ahead as time dwindled in the first stanza via Owen Earle (19:30), who scored with 30 seconds remaining on the clock. Brandon Verschueren and Hunter Monkhouse added the assists on the lone-goal for the Irish.

The Boys from Burford would get on the board midway through the second period (10:56) as 16-year-old Kyle Ilao scored his first junior career goal to tie the game at 1-1. Ilao also added an assist on the game-winning-goal from Derick Da Silva as time shifted to the latter stages of the 3rd period at 10:53. Burford-born Connor MacPhee added an assist on the Da Silva tally.

Caleb Ursu stopped 31 of 32 shots in the victory.

These two clubs will collide in a week’s time as the Irish visit the Brant Sports Complex on Sunday, September 26 for a 6:30PM puck-drop.
